When I first came to the US, I was like, "I'm going to survive with a bike and live my life on a bike," but a month later, I realized it's almost impossible because there were no convenience stores near the office, and I couldn't join my friends since the activities were too far away for a bike. We ended up getting a car, and I started wondering why there is no decent public transportation system here in Silicon Valley. There are several reasons: first, Ford's invention of cars happened in the U.S.; second, the presence of major freeways right in the city makes it very convenient to get from one place to another using the freeway; and third, in the 50s, local government took over public transportation systems and didn't have enough money to support them. Another reason is the layout of a typical U.S. neighborhood compared to a European neighborhood, with a lot of dead ends where you can't really operate a bus. I've realized that Americans are all about convenience; driving your own vehicle is very convenient and gets you everywhere fast. Oh, I wish we had a better public transportation system.

3. My story
When I traveled to LA, I was struck by how there's no decent public transportation system. Car culture has taken over. I remember staring out as my Uber zipped through what a typical U.S. neighborhood looks like, with wide streets tailored for vehicles, not pedestrians. The irony hit me; in a city full of cars, People are supposed to get everywhere fast, yet there I was, stuck in traffic, missing the efficiency of a good subway ride.
